The rocket "Ukkie" was built around 1995 by two NAVRO members, Ad de Heer and Vincent Kouer. Ukkie, which ironicly means small one in Dutch, is a monstrous rocket of 3.6 metres long and has a diameter of 300mm. Although technically an high power rocket, it was built more like a model rocket. When it was built the NAVRO had no access to HPR motors, so Ukkie was powered by 13 Estes D12-5 motors. Ukkie was eventually launched at the third attempt. The first time it didn't fit in NAVRO's launch tower and the second time the rocket had rested on its fins the night before and two fins were now at a wrong angle.
After it was repaired Ukkie was finally launched on 21 May, 1999 at NAVRO's NLD9, where it made had a spectacular launch. It was like looking at a launch in slow motion. Ukkie reached an altitude of about 50 metres, which isn't that bad considering 3 out of 13 motors didn't ignited. Ukkie is now preserved on in our clubhouse, hanging on the ceiling and covering most of it.
